I know... I shot myself in the foot there...! This will make you laugh Isaac... I was on a radio show last night finding explanations for sightings in Durham and Sunderland and the main sighting in question was quite obviously the ufo lanterns... I actually thought of you as i was telling Les Gunner!!
I didn't mean to be insulting... I felt like that because of an article written by Jenny Randles in FT... There are a lot of sightings of actual craft with orange lights and these are all dismissed out of hand due to the balloon craze. I think I was being a little exasperated, but no offence was intended..
It's a good job I'm an irony addict!!

"...They were high in the sky and were followed by a white plane which appeared to be escorting them, it was without doubt moving 'with' them... They moved slowly and not in a way that seemed incongrous to modern technology. I thought they may be hot-air balloons but they seemd too bright and too high...
...by the time I got home (5mins) they had gone. A helicopter was circling the area and did so for 15 mins. Probably a mundane explanation for this but it seemed very strange..."
Are these balloons usually followed by white planes
Do the Civil Aviation Authority authorise planes to fly over central London escorting balloons
Who sent the helicopter up to circle the area? And, why |
By the way, I'm hoping to obtain some video of this event from yet another witness.
The relevant witness has now provided the video at the link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrutlerTPXQ
I'm afraid the video is basically an example of the difficulties involved in analysing low resolution, highly pixelated camera phone footage.
The accompanying account (posted on the anon forum section of ATS) included the following:
This anonymous post is in response to ATS thread: Multiple UFO's Over London on 02/01/07?
My name is Cat and I am an IT lecturer in Camden London.
Sorry to say that I was there and saw these things. They were NOT STARS - they were large spheres, solid, red and orange texture like an organic substance (hence some people say orange some say red) - as if you were seeing a semi transparent skin with lights inside - but NOT in a balloon way. They were very low and there were about fifty of them at least - though the figure was nearer eighty I think - they came across from North to South in droves. They were only metres above the buildings.
I have video but when you watch it the streetlights make these things look like specks of white light - this is NOT what they looked like. The photo online is not representative of the motion or substance.
The whole street was stopped and watching - there must be more pictures out there. Police and helicopters were following.
It was really insane. They seemed to disappear into a spider like cloud trail., well kind of went up in the sky together like they were being sucked.
I have been trying to find out if they were UFO balloons but they seemed too round and too solid somehow. They were really weird.
I hope they were balloons but it doesn't sit right with me.
I've asked a few more questions, but not yet had any response from "Cat".
Kind Regards,
Isaac |

There is now available online far better video footage of the lights over Archway (London) last week.
The article accompanying the new footage is at:
http://tinyurl.com/3e55mn
The link for the video (by John Zimmerman, of Bredgar Road, Archway) can be found at the bottom of that page, specifically at:
http://www.islingtongazette.co.uk/video/UFOfootage.aspx
Personally, I think this is the best thai lantern footage I've seen.
It has been interesting to note the confusion in the press articles in relation to this and related sightings.:
(1) The new article mentions in passing that the video relates to a sighting on 31 January 2007, whereas
(2) most press articles (and several accounts from witnesses) have clearly indicated that the sightings were on Thursday 1 February 2007, and
(3) one article has referred to sightings of thai lanterns over Kings Lynn in Anglia (England) half an hour later, when the press reports giving details of that sighting actually indicate that the Kings Lynn thai lanterns were released on the Saturday 3 February 2007.
These points hardly inspire confidence in the fact checking in these UFO press articles.
Kind Regards,
Isaac |

From article: Now Camden Council has admitted that sky lanterns were launched at a private gathering in Waterlow Park, Highgate Hill - just a few hundred metres away.
A spokeswoman for the council said: "There was a private event at Waterlow Park that evening. It was a small family memorial service. They did set off lanterns, but we weren't aware that they were going to do that."
Anonymous council spokesman, anonymous 'private event,' anonymous 'small family.'
If the witnesses had all been anonymous like this, imagine how the "sceptics" would have reacted to the story itself! |
